REAL STUDENT VIEWS

Izzy, aeronautical engineering,

My favourite part of the course has been my placement year. During my placement year at Collins Aerospace I also applied for, and was accepted onto, the McLaren 60 Scholars Programme and was able to do both simultaneously. The 60 Scholars events were mainly online and my placement fully supported me to go and do the sessions whilst at work as it was helping my development as a woman in STEM.

Aadhi, digital games development

My course encourages communication and collaboration with classmates to develop new ideas and work together on activities. One of the best parts is the flexibility to learn not just one core skill, but a range of skills I can use both in and out of university.

Beth, automotive engineering

Engineering at Brighton has a great balance between theoretical, practical and software application. The facilities have allowed me to gain knowledge of welding, 3D printing, simulation data analysis and so much more. My course is particularly great at bringing in external engineers to share their experiences and insight into real-world engineering.

Cinar, architecture

Keeping up with lectures, attendance and project submissions while striving for success is challenging, but with support systems at every corner and Brighton’s warm, positive energy, those challenges become manageable and even truly enjoyable.

Sade, architecture

My favourite part of my studies is the freedom we have to explore and experiment. I learn a lot through trial and error and experimentation. Also, that we have the ability to combine knowledge from many different subject areas into the course. People tend to think architecture is just about designing buildings, but it is so much more than that.

Istvan, computer science with cyber security

Our lecturers always have relevant, up-to-date experience in the topic they teach, while they are also interested in our ideas. Collaborating with other students has also been a key part of the course and it is really motivating to see how others are invested in group projects.

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

At Brighton we take a socially conscious, sustainable and collaborative approach. Our architecture and design courses encourage you to find your own creative voice and explore design in context; to reimagine and contribute to society and the world we live in.

Design that matters

You’ll design with, and for, real people and communities. Through collaborative studios and live projects, you’ll learn to create products and spaces that respond to people, social challenges and the environments in which they live, work and connect.

Undine

Undine, architecture

Through studying architecture at Brighton I have gained a great understanding of the importance of working as a sustainable practice. With the construction industry responsible for over 40% of total carbon dioxide emitted, designing thoughtfully is a priority.

Showcase your work

You’ll have the opportunity to show your final year projects at the end of year show.

And there are also work in progress shows in your first and second years.

Professional accreditations

Our Architecture BA(Hons) is accredited by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Our Product Design BSc(Hons) is accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED).

Industry-connected learning

You’ll develop your practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge – from placement opportunities and portfolio workshops, to industry events and links with the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).

RIBA professionals offer our architecture students one-to- one mentoring, offering advice, project portfolio and CV advice, as well as arranging mock interviews.

CIVIL ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION

Our civil engineering and construction degrees explore sustainability, resilient design and the role of digital skills in shaping the future of our built environment. Fieldwork, site visits and exciting projects based on real-life case studies bring learning to life.

Learning with purpose

You’ll work on projects that respond to challenges that face the world today. Construction students develop life care plans for real buildings and study contemporary issues like the Building Safety Act, developed in response to the Grenfell Tower fire.

Civil engineering students work on real-world problems in developing countries as part of the Engineering for People Design Challenge.

Test your ideas

We have the specialist, industry-standard equipment you need to build skills and test ideas. You could be in the concrete lab making and testing concrete, testing structures in the dynamics lab or flood monitoring using wave-generating flumes. You’ll also gain experience of industry-standard building information modelling software.

Professional accreditations

Our civil engineering and construction courses are accredited by multiple professional bodies. Professional accreditation confirms that your course meets rigorous benchmarks for academic excellence and professional relevance and can open the door to careers and opportunities in the UK and beyond.
