Often, human beings fear stepping beyond their sub-cultures or comfort zones, but when the culture around you is welcoming and doesn’t make you feel ‘othered’, it becomes a space where you can truly grow. It has felt like a home to me – one where I’ve been encouraged, supported and challenged by a group of educators who care deeply about your growth as both a person and a researcher.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMMUNITY
We welcome new students from all around the world each year and we understand how important it is for them to build a community. This is why we offer plenty of opportunities for international students to connect with other students, both before and after they arrive in Brighton. Before they arrive, offer holders are invited to join our online community platform where they can meet other new students and join groups based on their interests, course subject or home country. The international office also runs in-region pre-departure events, some in-person and some online, where new students can meet each other before they travel to the UK.
New international students are encouraged to attend our international orientation programme, which is designed to help them settle into life in the UK and the university and is an opportunity to meet other new students. International orientation activities run before our main Welcome Week programme. Once at the university, students are encouraged to make friends through student-led societies or activities hosted by Brighton Students’ Union. There are more than 100 societies that students can join – from faith-based groups to cultural societies, such as Brighton Asian Society and the Islamic Society, to hobbies and academic interests, such as BSU Book Club and Women in Business. New students can also join sports teams, either to play for fun or take part in competitions against other universities.
As well as ways for international students to make connections with other students, there are many places of worship across the city for students to find community within their culture. As a multicultural city, Brighton is home to multiple mosques, synagogues, a Hindu temple and many churches, as well as other religious places of worship. Students can contact our Faith and Spirituality team for support in connecting with religious communities across the city.
